Unfortunately this is more of an art than a
science. The best place to start is probably from the AllMyFun members' perspective. When they select which categories of events they're interested in, they get all of the events which are listed under any of the categories they choose. That means if your event is listed under "seasonal" and "outdoor recreation" and "family", then all members that have any one of those categories selected on their retrieval will get your event. So, for instance, if a member has selected only "outdoor recreation", they will still get your event on their retrieval, even though "family" and "seasonal" are not part of their interest categories. So, this means that you must be as specific is possible in categorizing your events. If, for instance, your event is a stock car race, you would not click on "family" or "outdoor recreation" because that's not a central theme of your event even though it may be appropriate for families and might be called a form of outdoor recreation. However, if you have a "family day" at the track with special prices for families and so on, then you could legitimately classify it under "family" as well. In the future we will be giving members the option of specifically excluding certain categories so that even if an event is in one of their interest categories, if it is also in one of their "exclude" categories, they will not get information on that event. So, for instance, if their interest categories include "skiing" and their "exclude" categories include "seniors", they would not get the information on a seniors' ski trip. This is because they decided that they did not want any information on seniors' events, regardless whether they also happen to be in one of their other interest categories. Do you see how putting your event in too many categories can actually hurt your chances of getting your information to the right people? I hope this has given you a better perspective on how to categorize your events! Close this window or click "Close" to return to the "Add Event" page. |
